Two Charged in Shooting - Third Suspect Sought

Released Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Dover – The Delaware State Police Criminal Investigation Unit have arrested two Dover area persons for several charges related to a shooting incident that occurred early Sunday morning in the development of Planters Woods.

The investigation began after a 15-year victim was outside of her home in the 200 block of Midessa Crossing Drive, Planters Woods, Dover at approximately 1:00am on Sunday, July 27. As the victim was standing alone in the area of her mailbox, she observed a Red Ford Escape SUV vehicle drive by her residence with the headlights on. The vehicle drove by slowly. It eventually turned around and began heading back towards her this time with the headlamps off.

The victim then observed the vehicle approach her and stop in front of her. The victim was able to see that it was being operated by an acquaintance, Renee A. Land, 19, of Woodcrest Drive, Dover.  The victim also observed and recognized two additional passengers in the vehicle, Darius D. Martin, 18 of Hayes Circle, Dover and Alex J. Durham, 16 of Harmony Lane, Dover.

The victim then stated she heard Ms. Land make a statement to the others when Alex Durham leaned out the rear window armed with a small handgun and pointed it at her. The victim turned and began to run away when she heard several shots fired. The victim fearing for her life fell to the ground to avoid being struck when the vehicle began driving away.

Additional family members of the victim who were inside the home when the shots were fired heard the noise and immediately came outside. The Ford Escape that left apparently went the wrong way and ended up at a dead end street. Because of this, it had to turn around and drive passed the victims residence again while the family members were present. Several of the members recognized the vehicle and knew it belonged to Ms. Land.

Investigating troopers recovered several spent casings from a .32 caliber handgun from the scene. As the investigation continued, detectives obtained search warrants and executed them this morning at Ms. Land’s residence. At approximately 7:00 am with the assistance of Dover Police Department, they entered the home and located Mr. Durham and Ms. Land. Both were apprehended without incident. Investigators also recovered a .32 caliber handgun underneath a mattress inside the home that is believed to be the weapon used in the crime.

Mr. Martin was not located. As a result of this investigation, Mr. Durham was arrested for Reckless Endangering First Degree, Conspiracy 2nd degree, Possession of a Weapon During the Commission of a Felony and Possession of a Weapon by Person Prohibited. He was committed to the Stevenson House in Milford in lieu of bail. Ms. Land was charged with Reckless Endangering First Degree, Conspiracy 2nd degree and Possession of a Weapon during the Commission of a Felony. She was committed to the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Center in New Castle.

Darius Martin is currently wanted for Reckless Endangering First Degree, Conspiracy 2nd degree, Possession of a Weapon during the Commission of a Felony and Possession of a Weapon by Person Prohibited. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to call investigators at 302.697.2104 ext. 508 or Crime Stoppers at 1.800.TIP.3333.
