Speed a Factor in Late Night Fatal Crash

Edgemoor- The Delaware State Police Collision
Reconstruction Unit (CRU) is investigating a fatal crash which
occurred on today’s date at approximately 12:48 a.m.
This investigation revealed a 2002 Ford Mustang (operated by
William McVey, 36, of New Castle) was traveling in the right thru
lane of I-495 southbound and was approaching the off-ramp to
Edgemoor Road. A witness traveling behind the Ford reported that the
Mustang was traveling well below the posted speed limit of 65 miles
per hour. The witness moved to the center lane to pass it. At this
point, McVey allegedly accelerated to a high rate of speed, passed
the witness, and traveled straight onto the right shoulder (the
roadway curves to the left in this area).
The right front end of the Mustang scraped the steel guardrail
for the initial impact. The Ford then veered sharply to the left and
crossed all three travel lanes. Its left front end then struck the
concrete barrier for the second impact. The Mustang then angled back
into the left thru lane and overturned onto its roof. Mr. MeVey was
ejected from the vehicle while it was overturning.
William McVey was pronounced dead at Christiana Hospital. He was
not wearing his seatbelt.
This crash remains under investigation. Speed is considered a
factor, however, it is unknown if the driver was impaired.
No other vehicles were involved and no one else was occupying the
Mustang.
Traffic was diverted for approximately two hours while this crash
was investigated.
