A.M. School Bus Crash on Route 72

Released- Tuesday, May 06, 2008

Newark- On Tuesday, May 06, 2008, at approximately 7:03 a.m., Troopers were called to the area of Route 72 northbound, just south of Route 4, for the report of a school bus involved crash.

This investigation revealed a 2006 Nissan Altima (operated by Starline Griffin, 24, of Newark) was stopped on Route 72 northbound, in the right lane, south of Route 4. A 1998 School Bus (bus #550, operated by Terrie Williamson, 27, of Newark) was stopped behind the Nissan. A 2007 School Bus (bus #680, operated by Larry Gould, 59, of Bear) approached the rear of bus #550, did not stop in time and rear ended same. Bus #550 was pushed into the rear of the Nissan.

Three occupants in the Nissan were transported from the scene to Christiana Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Both bus drivers were transported to Christiana Hospital for evaluation.

The two school buses, which were on their way to Gauger-Cobbs Middle School {of the Christina School District located on Gender Road}, were transporting a total of 55 students at the time of the crash. All 55 students were transported to Christiana Hospital for evaluation purposes. Three to four students reported minor injuries.

Mr. Larry Gould was cited for Inattentive Driving- a traffic citation.

The roadway was reduced to one lane for approximately one hour while this crash was investigated.
