Released-
Thursday, April 10, 2008
New Castle-
On Wednesday, April 9th,
at approximately 9:00 p.m., a Troop 2 patrol officer was on New
Castle Avenue in the area of Memorial Drive when he attempted to
stop a suspicious vehicle- a U-Haul Truck. This vehicle was
observed as it ran over a curb and made several u-turns on the same
roadway. The officer activated his emergency equipment and the
truck failed to stop. A pursuit ensued which eventually led
officers onto I-495 northbound from Terminal Avenue.
The U-Haul
continued north at which time a Troop 1 patrol officer deployed his
departmentally issued ‘stop sticks’ in the vicinity of Governor
Printz Boulevard. The U-haul ran over this tire deflation device,
however, continued north into Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania
authorities, including the Pennsylvania State Police, took over the
pursuit which came to a stop on the New Jersey side of the Commodore
Barry Bridge. It was noted the U-Haul rammed a Pennsylvania State
Police car several times prior to stopping.
The driver, and
sole occupant of the truck, got out of his vehicle and allegedly
fired a handgun into the air. He then ran away on foot, however, was
eventually taken into custody.
Officers
identified the driver as Kennard Terry, 45, of Buena Vista
Drive in New Castle. He faces charges in Pennsylvania
(investigation being handled by the Pennsylvania State Police and
New Jersey (investigation being handled by the Delaware River Port
Authority). Here in Delaware, charges are on file charging Terry
with multiple traffic offenses, including Aggressive Driving, along
with several felony offenses such as Disregarding a Police Officers
Signal, Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited, Carrying a
Concealed Weapon (Second Offense within 5-Years), Possession of a
Deadly Weapon during the Commission of a Felony and Unauthorized Use
of a Motor Vehicle (investigators learned the U-Haul was due back
several days prior and had not been returned).
Terry is
currently in custody in New Jersey at the Gloucester County Jail.
He is being held on $75,000.00 bail.
No one was
injured as a result of this incident. |
