Graffiti Arrests
Released-
Thursday, April 10, 2008
New Castle-
On Wednesday, April 9th,
at approximately 4:45 p.m. the Troop 6 Commander was traveling on
Route 1 in the area of Route 273 when he witnessed subjects placing
graffiti on the Route 1 overpass. The Trooper stopped and
confronted two subjects- male juveniles (one 16-years-old from Bear
and one 17-years-old also from Bear).
The Troop 6
Captain told both subjects to cease their actions at which the two
graffiti bandits fled on foot. A second Trooper arrived on scene,
and upon observing this second officer, they again ran away. A foot
chase ensued and the spray painters were taken into custody.
The suspects
were transported back to Troop 6 for processing. They were both
charged with the following misdemeanor offenses: Possession of
Graffiti Tools, Resisting Arrest, Conspiracy 3rd and
Graffiti. The boys were each released on $2,000.00 unsecured bail.
Darrell Cole,
of DelDOT’s public relations, advises his agency spends
approximately $200,000 to clean up graffiti as it pertains to
DelDOT’s infrastructure. This number is comprised of man-power and
materials.
The public is
again advised the Delaware State Police takes a zero-tolerance
stance on graffiti related crimes. Cpl/1 Jeff Whitmarsh says,
“These investigations will not be handled with a ‘please don’t do it
again’ approach. Any graffiti suspects identified will absolutely
be charged with all of the applicable offenses.” |
