DSP News Release: Saturday, October 31, 2009- Fatal Crash Probed Near Ellendale
Location: US 113, at County Route 224; 1 mile north of Ellendale, Delaware, Sussex County
Date of Occurrence: Friday, October 30, 2009, at 10:32 p.m.
Resume: Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit members are investigating a fatal crash which occurred just outside Ellendale last evening. To help simplify this crash, the following vehicles were involved along with their respective operators:
· 1997 Ford Taurus- William Gibbs, 42, of Georgetown, Delaware · 2010 Ford F-250- Caleb Ashley, 20, of Lincoln, Delaware · 1997 GMC Sierra- Major Foster, 45, of Lincoln, Delaware · 2001 Chevrolet Venture, Kimberly Copes, 28, of Georgetown, Delaware · 2002 Mazda Tribute- Wayne Ling, 52, of Berlin, Maryland
The Taurus was traveling northbound on US 113 approaching the intersection of CR 224. The F-250 was traveling in the left lane next to and slightly behind the Taurus.
The GMC was traveling west on CR 224 approaching the intersection with US 113. It failed to stop for a clearly posted stop sign and drove into the path of the Taurus and the F-250 resulting in the collision with both those vehicles.
After the crash, Mr. Foster ran from the scene on foot. He ran north on US 113 in the right southbound lane of travel. He was then struck by the driver’s side mirror of the southbound traveling Chevrolet Venture. This impact knocked him to the ground where he was struck by the Mazda Tribute.
Mr. Foster was pronounced dead at the scene.
The only other person injured was Mr. Gibbs. He was transported from the scene to Beebe Hospital with a wrist injury.
A computer check revealed Mr. Foster was a suspended driver. It is unknown at this time if driver impairment was a factor on his part.
This crash remains under investigation. No arrests were made. The roadway was shut down for several hours. |
