On October 5th, 2009, the Delaware State Police was contacted by the Lower Paxton Township Police Department, located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, reference to an identity theft case that originated in our jurisdiction.

The investigation revealed that Ms. Diane Perrin, 41, of the 28000 Block of Carpenter Road, Milton, was employed at a medical office as a medical assistant.  Ms. Perrin was employed in this capacity from February 2008 to March 2009.  As a result of her position, Ms. Perrin had access to the personal information of patients of the practice.

Ms. Perrin obtained personal information of eleven patients and three other individuals from outside of the practice.  Accounts were then opened through Capitol One.  Of the attempts, there were five applications that were approved and lines of credit established.  The remaining ten applications were declined.

Ms. Perrin was charged with the following on November 3rd, 2009 at Delaware State Police Troop 4:

  • 11-Counts of Identity Theft (Felony)
  • 1-Count of Theft Under False Pretense Over $1,000.00 (Felony)

Ms. Perrin was arraigned and issued a $24,000.00 secure bond.  Ms. Perrin was committed to Women's Correctional Center pending extradition to Pennsylvania for similar charges.

The Delaware State Police would urge the public to be conscious of identity theft and suggest the following safety measures to reduce the chance that your personal information is compromised:

  • Utilize a shredder for important unwanted documents containing personal information.
  • Immediately report lost and/or stolen credit cards to the police.
  • Monitor your credit reports through use of services, such as www.annualcreditreport.com
  • Maintain your birth certificate and social security card in a safe place – do not carry these items with you in your typical day to day travels.
  • Review your financial statements from banks and credit cards upon receipt to insure that any and all charges are yours.
