Overnight Crash Kills Lewes Teen

Released-Saturday, May 9, 2009

Rehoboth-Members of the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) investigated an early morning crash involving a single vehicle.

Shortly after 1:30 a.m. this morning, troopers responded to the area of W. Buckingham Drive and Coventry Road, just west of Rehoboth.

Troopers learned that a 2001 Jeep Cherokee (operated by 18 year Jordyn K. Owens of Lewes) was traveling southbound on Coventry Road within the Rehoboth Beach Yacht and Country Club Development.  Ms. Owens attempted to turn right onto W. Buckingham Drive but was unable to safely negotiate the turn.  As a result, the Cherokee exited the south edge of W. Buckingham Drive and struck an embankment, prior to striking a tree and overturning.

Ms. Owens was not restrained and was partially ejected through the open sunroof of the Cherokee and sustained head injuries.  Ms. Owens was transported to Beebe Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

There were three teenage passengers in the vehicle.  The front seat passenger was not restrained and she sustained non-life threatening injuries.  The two rear seat passengers were properly restrained and uninjured.

Speed is believed to be a factor in this crash.

Additionally, alcohol is believed to be a factor on the part of Ms. Owens as well as all of her passengers.  (Warrants for underage consumption for the passengers are pending).

The roadway was shut down for approximately two hours while this crash was being investigated.
