Update #1 DSP News Release: Friday, December 18, 2009- Troopers Probe Single Car Fatal Crash in Hockessin
Resume: The subject who died in this morning’s crash in Hockessin is identified as Stephen Herbster, 30, of Wilmington.
This crash remains under investigation and charges have not been filed as of yet.
DSP News Release: Friday, December 18, 2009- Troopers Probe Single Car Fatal Crash in Hockessin
Location: Route 41 / 48 Split, Hockessin, Delaware, New Castle County
Date of Occurrence: Friday, December 18, 2009, at approximately 2:08 a.m.
Resume: At approximately 2:08 a.m. this morning, a fatal crash occurred at the Route 41 / 48 split in Hockessin.
A 2007 Mazda 6 (operated by Candace Carhart, 20, of Wilmington) was traveling southbound on Route 41. As the vehicle approached the split with Route 48, the operator initially started to the left to travel on Route 48 eastbound. The operator then corrected back to the right, toward Route 41, and entered into the grass median that splits the two roadways. The Mazda then overturned several times, ejecting the front seat male passenger.
Ms. Carhart was transported from the scene to Christiana Hospital where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries. She was wearing her seatbelt.
The front seat passenger was transported from the scene to Christiana Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Investigators are still working to positively identify this person and notify his family. This subject was not wearing his seatbelt.
Alcohol is considered a factor in this case.
Charges have not yet been filed as this crash remains under investigation. Witnesses are asked to call 302-834-2620 ext. 244.
