State Police Probe Early Morning Crash Involving Ambulance

Released-Friday, May 16, 2008

Lincoln-The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) is currently investigating a vehicle crash involving a Hart to Heart ambulance and one other vehicle.

The incident occurred this morning at 4:30 a.m., near the intersection of southbound SR1 (Coastal Hwy) and Sussex RD 215 A (Daniels Road).

Upon arrival, investigators learned a 2007 Chevrolet ambulance operated by James M. Larrimore, 3rd., 18, of Lincoln was traveling southbound in the left lane of SR1.  As the ambulance proceeded southbound, a 2004 Saturn Ion operated by Jessica L. Coffey, 25, of Milford attempted a u-turn from the southbound shoulder of SR1 directly in front of the ambulance and was struck.

Coffey was not wearing a seatbelt.  She was taken to Milford Memorial Hospital and then to Christiana Hospital and treated for life threatening injuries.  Larrimore was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured. He was not charged.

His front seat passenger and (Hart To Heart employee) Marion W. Lacurts, 59, of Bishopville, Md.,  was wearing a seatbelt and was transported to Beebe Medical Center and treated and released for non-life threatening injuries.  A second passenger, a nurse seated in the rear of the ambulance identified as Cary Rutherford, 45, of Milton was also wearing a seatbelt and was taken to Beebe Medical Center where he was treated and released for non-life threatening injuries.

It’s unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash which remains under investigation.  Both lanes of SR1 were closed for three hours while investigators examined the scene.  The ambulance was not responding to an emergency call at the time of the crash.
