Probe Early Morning Crash Involving Ambulance

Lincoln-The
Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) is
currently investigating a vehicle crash involving a Hart to Heart
ambulance and one other vehicle.
The incident
occurred this morning at 4:30 a.m., near the intersection of
southbound SR1 (Coastal Hwy) and Sussex RD 215 A (Daniels Road).
Upon arrival,
investigators learned a 2007 Chevrolet ambulance operated by
James M. Larrimore, 3rd., 18, of Lincoln was
traveling southbound in the left lane of SR1. As the ambulance
proceeded southbound, a 2004 Saturn Ion operated by Jessica L.
Coffey, 25, of Milford attempted a u-turn from the southbound
shoulder of SR1 directly in front of the ambulance and was struck.
Coffey was not
wearing a seatbelt. She was taken to Milford Memorial Hospital and
then to Christiana Hospital and treated for life threatening
injuries. Larrimore was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured. He
was not charged.
His front seat
passenger and (Hart To Heart employee) Marion W. Lacurts, 59,
of Bishopville, Md., was wearing a seatbelt and was transported to
Beebe Medical Center and treated and released for non-life
threatening injuries. A second passenger, a nurse seated in the
rear of the ambulance identified as Cary Rutherford, 45, of
Milton was also wearing a seatbelt and was taken to Beebe Medical
Center where he was treated and released for non-life threatening
injuries.
It’s unknown if
alcohol was a factor in the crash which remains under
investigation. Both lanes of SR1 were closed for three hours while
investigators examined the scene. The ambulance was not
responding to an emergency call at the time of the crash. |
