Released –
Tuesday, February 26, 2008 (7:31 p.m.)
Dover –
The
following is an outline of the crash that occurred earlier this
afternoon on Dover – Kenton Road.
At
approximately 2:04 p.m. a 2000 International 6 – wheel truck
(operated by Virgil L. Spencer Jr., 46, of Hartly, Delaware and
owned by the State of Delaware - DelDot) was traveling southbound on
Kenton Road just south of Central Church Road. The operator
apparently fell asleep at the wheel. A passenger in the vehicle
(Richard M. Short, 31, of Townsend, Delaware) yelled out to the
driver as he saw the vehicle drift into the northbound lane. Mr.
Spencer was startled from the commotion and overcorrected causing
the DelDot truck to overturn into an embankment on the side of the
road.
No other
vehicles were involved. Alcohol was not a factor and it is unknown
whether seatbelts were used.
All occupants
including a third passenger (Nicola Mancino, 48, of Clayton,
Delaware) were transported to Kent General Hospital in Dover to be
treated for non – life threatening injuries. Mr. Spencer was cited
by Troopers for Inattentive Driving.
