Harbeson Man Charged with Armed Robbery and Kidnapping

Released-Thursday, February 21, 2008

Lewes-Yesterday, state police major crimes detectives charged a 42-year-old Harbeson man with robbery, kidnapping and related charges stemming from a December 2007 incident that occurred at the Lewes Rehoboth Moose Lodge.

On Monday, December 31, 2007 at approximately 7:00 a.m. state troopers were dispatched to the 28900 block of Lewes-Georgetown Highway to investigate a reported armed robbery.

Upon arrival, investigators contacted the 67-year-old male victim from Harbeson. Detectives learned the victim volunteered at the lodge as an administrator. The victim was responsible for making a bank deposit on the morning of the incident and was approached by the suspect later identified as David R. Wright.

Wright was wearing a dark mask and armed with a shotgun. Wright told the victim to drop a money bag containing cash and checks. The victim refused and Wright allegedly grabbed the barrel of the gun and swung it like a baseball bat striking the victim. The victim dropped the bag and was ordered back inside the business.

Once inside, Wright bound the victim’s feet and hands with duct tape robbed the victim. Wright fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash and personal items belonging to the victim.

During the investigation troopers located a white Dodge Caravan parked along Log Cabin Hill Road behind the Moose Lodge property. An inventory search of the van yielded a Department of Corrections identification card belonging to Wright.

The registered owner of the van was contacted and told investigators he sold the van to Wright several months prior to the robbery. On January 3, 2008 detectives received an anonymous tip from a concerned citizen who advised Wright was in possession of a shotgun and a large amount of cash. Investigators were able to verify the information conveyed in the tip.

As a result of their investigation detectives linked Wright to the robbery and formally charged him with the following criminal offenses: Robbery 1st Degree (F), Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (F), Kidnapping 2nd Degree (F), Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony (F), Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (F) and Assault 3rd (M).

Wright was arraigned and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution in lieu of $96,000.00 cash bail.
