Reported Traffic Crashes Soar During Icy Moring Commute
Released-Wednesday, January 23, 2008
Sussex County-Earlier
today, between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. the Delaware
State Police were inundated with a soaring number of calls for
weather related traffic crashes reported along Sussex County
roadways.
Troopers and dispatchers worked diligently and handled a total of
fifty-three traffic crashes within the county. That number was up
from five crashes reported during the same time period on Tuesday.
Normally, dispatchers receive approximately five calls per crash on
any given day. That would put the number of estimated calls at two
hundred sixty five for today's morning commute.
That number is astounding considering the fact that in addition to
dispatching for the three Sussex County troops, 911- dispatchers
assigned to the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in Georgetown
answer calls and dispatch police officers for approximately eighteen
additional police departments within the county.
During this morning’s rush hour 911-dispatchers effectively utilized
the “Delaware State Police Communications Storm Plan”. The plan is
intended to be implemented during major storms, natural disasters
and catastrophic incidents. The plan ensures primary emergency
dispatch communications are available to the fullest extent
possible.
Low temperatures and freezing road conditions (black-ice) were
contributing factors in many of the crashes. Fifteen of the crashes
reported today, involved non-life threatening injuries.
