DSP News Release: Fatal Pedestrian Crash w/o Lincoln, DE



·         US113 at Fitzgerald’s Road (CR207), west of Lincoln, DE


Date of Occurrence:

·         Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 1:20 a.m.



·         39 year old male (Release of name pending notification of NOK)

·         Chester B. Knapp 3rd-56 of Wilmington

·         1997 Pontiac Transport Van




Lincoln-The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash in which a pedestrian was struck early this morning, west of Lincoln, DE.


The crash occurred at approximately 1:20 a.m. this morning as a 1997 Pontiac Transport Van operated by Chester B. Knapp 3rd-56 of Wilmington was traveling southbound on US113 approaching the intersection of Fitzgerald’s Road.  Preliminary investigation revealed that the 39 year old male pedestrian had walked into the southbound lanes of US113 into the path of the Pontiac Transport Van and was struck by the front of the vehicle. 


The 39 year old male pedestrian was transported by EMS to Milford Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.  His name will be released pending the notification of next of kin.


Chester B. Knapp 3rd was properly restrained with seatbelt and was not injured.


The roadway was closed for approximately 3.5 hours while the crash was investigated.


The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this incident.


Troopers remind pedestrians of using caution and safety when walking on or near roadways. If you must cross a roadway, make sure to look left, then right, then left again before proceeding. When walking near a roadway always make yourself visible to drivers by wearing bright/light colored clothing and reflective materials. Pedestrians that are walking at night must carry a flashlight for added safety.
