DSP News Release: Maryland Man Charged in Shooting Investigation

Charges and Arraignment Information:

 

-Attempted Murder 1st Degree

 

-Possession of a Deadly Weapon during the Commission of a Felony

 

Arraigned at the Sussex County Court of Common Pleas. Committed to the Sussex Correctional Center for lack of $150,000.00 cash bail.

Seaford, DE- Delaware State Police detectives have arrested a 19 year old Maryland man for his involvement in a shooting that occurred on August 20, 2011 in Seaford.

 

On Friday, September 9, Kevon J. Spencer, 19, of Cambridge, Maryland, was arrested and charged with one count each of Attempted Murder 1st Degree and Possession of a Deadly Weapon during the Commission of a Felony. He was arraigned at the Sussex County Court of Common Pleas and then committed to the Sussex Correctional Center after failing to post $150,000.00 bail.

 

Detectives were able to develop Spencer as a suspect in the August 20, 2011 shooting of a 24 year old Laurel, DE man that had occurred at the Royal Farms located on US Rt. 13 just south of Seaford, after witnesses came forward and provided information. After further investigation, detectives obtained an arrest warrant charging Spencer with the above list of crimes. This information was also disseminated to the other police agencies throughout the state. On Friday, September 9, an officer from the Laurel Police Department, who was investigating an unrelated incident involving Spencer, recognized him as the subject currently wanted by the Delaware State Police. Spencer was then taken into custody without incident and turned over to detectives.

DSP News Release:  Laurel Man Stable after Shooting

 Resume:

Seaford, De-Delaware State Police early Saturday morning August 20th responded to the Royal Farms convenience store located on Sussex Highway S/O Seaford Delaware. 

 

The Sussex 911 center around 1:53 a.m. received an emergency call about a large crowd fighting in the Royal Farms parking lot.  As Troopers responded to the fight additional information obtained advised that a person had also been shot. 

 

When Troopers arrived they located a 24 year old Laurel man who had been shot in the back.  Troopers and Emergency Medical personnel administered First Aid to the victim who was eventually transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital.  Surgery was performed on the victim and he is listed in stable condition.

 

The investigation revealed approximately 30-50 people had just left the Dug Out Bar and began to congregate in the parking lot of the Royal Farms.  Investigative information obtained by detectives also revealed several clusters of people were fighting throughout the parking lot prior to the shooting. 

 

One of these areas where fighting was taking place involved the victim.  The 24 year old Laurel man was fighting another unidentified individual prior to being shot.  The victim was fighting when he was shot in the back.  The bullet traveled through the victim’s back and exited through his abdominal region.   (Disclosure of the number of shots fired and number of times the victim was struck will be released at a later date.)

 

Currently there is no suspect information available.

 

Delaware State Police detectives are continuing to investigate the shooting, but ask the public to contact authorities with any additional information.
