DSP News Release: Troopers Investigate Fatal Crash Capitol Trail, Newark

Operators/Passengers/Vehicles:

·         Operator 1: Thomas Staub-40 of New Castle, DE (Properly restrained/not injured)

·         Vehicle 1: 2004 Mack Trash/Refuse Truck (Waste Management Inc.)

·         Operator 2: Marcos Zamora-22 of Newark, DE (Not properly restrained/non life threatening injuries)

·         Vehicle 2: 1992 Toyota Camry

·         Front Seat Passenger: Joel Zamora-41 of Newark, DE (Not properly restrained/Deceased)

Newark-The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate a fatal crash involving two vehicles that occurred on Capitol Trail, this morning.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the crash occurred at approximately 5:18 a.m. as Thomas Staub-40 of New Castle, was operating a 2004 Mack Trash Truck westbound on Capitol Trail in the right lane, attempting to make a right turn into a private lot. A 1992 Toyota Camry, operated by Marcos Zamora-22 of Newark, was traveling Capitol Trail westbound behind the trash truck.  The Camry failed to stop and struck the rear of the trash truck.

Joel Zamora (Father of Marcos Zamora), the front seat passenger of the Camry, was transported to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center where he was pronounced dead.

Marcos Zamora was transported to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center with non life threatening injuries.  Status and disposition is not known at the time of this release.

Thomas Staub was not injured as a result of this crash.

Alcohol or drugs are not indicated as a cause of this crash.

Capitol Trail westbound at Polly Drummond Hill Road was closed for approximately 2 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The Delaware State Police Crash reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this crash with charges pending the conclusion of this investigation.

Newark- The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash involving 2 vehicles and one confirmed fatality that occurred on Capitol Trail west of Red Mill Road earlier this morning.

Troopers are advising that Capitol Trail westbound at Polly Drummond Hill Road is closed while the crash is investigated and cleared.  Motorists are advised to avoid the area completely and plan alternate routes.  Updated information will be provided as information related to the crash investigation becomes available.
