DSP News Release:  Elderly Male Robbed at ATM

Victim:

·         82 year old male

Suspect:  

·         White male, 45-50 years of age, 5’06” tall, last seen wearing all dark clothing.

North Wilmington-Delaware State Troopers are investigating the robbery of an elderly male as he was withdrawing money from an ATM machine located in the Graylyn Crest Shopping Center, last night.

The incident occurred Monday, October 3, 2011 at approximately 6:30 p.m. as the 82 year old male victim was withdrawing money from the ATM located inside a vestibule at the PNC Bank.  The victim was approached inside the vestibule from behind by a male suspect, who pushed him and demanded his money.  The victim complied and turned over an undisclosed amount of cash and fled on foot into the parking lot.  The victim was not injured during this incident. 

Troopers remind the public to use caution when withdrawing money from ATM machines.  In this case, the victim was approached after he had withdrawn his money, but it is important to be aware of their surroundings throughout the entire process, beginning with walking up to the ATM machine and looking for suspicious people or activity.  Also, try to avoid utilizing ATM’s at night or locate one in a well lit and public area. The public is also encouraged to follow their instincts, and if they feel uneasy or uncomfortable, cancel the transaction as quickly as possible and leave the area.  Contact Police to report.
