DSP News Release: Bicyclist Struck, Terminal Avenue, New Castle

Victim/Bicyclist: · 59 year old male of New Castle, DE (Admitted in serious condition) · Release of name pending notification of NOK
Operators/Vehicle: · Michael P. Duffy-56 of Woodbury, NJ (Not injured) · 2006 Mack Truck (Waste Management Inc., Roll-Off Refuse Garbage Truck)
Resume New Castle-The Delaware State Police are investigating a crash involving a bicyclist and garbage truck that occurred earlier this afternoon at the intersection of Terminal Avenue and New Castle Avenue, New Castle.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. this afternoon as a Waste Management Inc., 2006 Mack Roll-Off Refuse Garbage Truck being operated by Michael P. Duffy-56 of Woodbury, NJ was traveling westbound on Terminal Avenue approaching the intersection of New Castle Avenue, making a left turn onto southbound New Castle Avenue. A 59 year old male bicyclist was traveling in an unknown direction in the area of northbound New Castle Avenue and Terminal Avenue intersection when he was struck by the truck and dragged approximately 200 feet.
The operator of the truck did not see the victim until he was alerted by witnesses as to the incident. After being alerted, he immediately pulled over on New Castle Avenue approximately 200 feet south of Terminal Avenue, after the victim had already been pulled under the front wheels of the truck and dragged on the roadway.
The 59 year old male bicyclist was transported by EMS to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center where he was admitted in serious condition with multiple injuries. His name will be released pending the notification of next of kin.
Michael P. Duffy was not injured as a result of this crash.
New Castle Avenue southbound was closed for approximately 2.0 hours while the crash was investigated.
The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this incident.
