DSP News Release: Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle


Location:  Hidden Haven Lane and Old Furnace Road, Georgetown, DE

Georgetown, DE-State Police are investigating a collision involving a pedestrian who was struck while crossing the road to retrieve her mail.


On Monday November 14, 2011 around 8:20 pm, Troopers responded to the area of Hidden Haven Lane and Old Furnace Road, for a 59 year old female who was struck by a vehicle while walking to her mailbox.  Patricia Rowan was talking on her cell phone at the time of the crash, crossed Old Furnace Road from her driveway toward her mailbox which is located on the south side of the roadway.  As she began to reach for the door to her mailbox, a vehicle traveling westbound on Old Furnace Road struck her causing her to fall into the roadway. 


A passer by traveling westbound on Old Furnace Road noticed the female hopping around in the roadway and stopped to assist.  Emergency personnel were notified by the witness through 9-1-1 and the Patricia was transported to Nanticoke Hospital for non life threatening injuries to her left side.


No concrete vehicle description could be given by the witness or the victim in this case.


Troopers remind pedestrians of using caution and safety when walking on or near roadways. If you must cross a roadway, make sure to look left, then right, then left again before proceeding. When walking near a roadway always make yourself visible to drivers by wearing bright/light colored clothing and reflective materials. Pedestrians that are walking at night must carry a flashlight for added safety.
