DSP News Release: Detectives Conducting Death Investigation



  • Amtrak Rail Line, .5 miles north of the Claymont Train Station, Claymont, DE

Date and Time of Occurrence: 

  • Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 12:15 p.m.


Operator and Vehicle:

  • 39 year old Richmond, VA male (train engineer)
  • 8 car Amtrak passenger train loaded with approximately 400 passengers



  • Unidentified male subject.



Claymont- Delaware State Police detectives are currently investigating the death of an unidentified male subject who was struck by a train this afternoon. 


The incident occurred at approximately 12:15 p.m. today as an eight car Amtrak passenger train was traveling in a northbound direction approximately one-half mile north of the Claymont train station. It was at this point that an unknown male subject entered onto the tracks from an eastbound direction. He then stopped in the path of the train and was subsequently struck. The engineer who was operating the train at the time activated its horn and emergency brakes; however, due to the train's high rate of speed, he was unable to stop in time.


The victim’s body was turned over to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner where an autopsy will be performed.


This incident remains under investigation at this time.

DSP News Release: Troopers Investigating Pedestrian Struck by Train

  • Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 12:15 p.m.



Claymont- The Delaware State Police are currently at the scene of an incident in which a pedestrian has been struck by a train early this afternoon in the area of Philadelphia Pike and Naamans Road in Claymont.


Initial information is that the pedestrian has died. 


The investigation into this incident is in its early stages and more details will be released after they are obtained from investigators.
