Wilmington- The Delaware State Police have charged a 40 year old New Castle man after he was struck by a vehicle after committing a shoplifting west of Wilmington last night.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:00 p.m. on Thursday as Sean Jones, 40, was walking in a southbound direction across the eastbound lanes of Kirkwood Highway east of Limestone Road, Wilmington. Jones stepped into the path of a 1995 Ford Taurus which was traveling eastbound on Kirkwood Highway and which was being operated by Debra Massado, 58. After being struck, Jones traveled approximately 30 feet in an eastbound direction before landing in the roadway.

As troopers were investigating the crash, they observed numerous bottles of lotion and hand soap on Jones as well as in the roadway and on the hood of the Ford Taurus. Further investigation revealed that the items had come from the Deals Store located at 4429 Kirkwood Highway (Kirkwood Plaza) which was adjacent to the crash scene. Troopers responded to the store where it was determined that Jones had shoplifted the merchandise from the store just prior to the crash. However, the store employees were unaware that the shoplifting had occurred.

Sean Jones was transported by EMS to the Christiana Hospital where he was treated and admitted with numerous injuries. His injuries are not considered life threatening. Jones was cited by troopers with the above charges.
