DSP News Release:  Troopers Investigate Four Vehicle Crash in Newark

 

Location: DE Rt. 273 eastbound at Old Baltimore Pike, Newark, DE

 

Date of Occurrence:  Friday, May 06, 2011 at 9:10 a.m.

 

Operators/Vehicles:

 

Operator 1: Latisha G. Spurlock, 28, Newark, DE

Vehicle 1: 2005 Honda Accord

 

Operator 2: Sylvia Pean-Alfaro, 35, San Antonio, TX

Vehicle 2: 2010 Nissan Altima

 

Operator 3: Justin E. Twilley, 23, Wilmington, DE

Vehicle 3: 2006 Chevrolet Pick Up (Unknown Model)

 

Operator 4; Matthew B. Lester, 29, Newark, DE

Vehicle 4: 1999 Chevrolet Pick Up (Unknown Model) pulling 2001 Cargo Craft Trailer

 

Resume:   

Newark- The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a four vehicle personal injury crash that occurred this morning in Newark.

 

The crash occurred at approximately 9:10 this morning as Matthew Lester, 29, was operating a 1999 Chevrolet truck pulling a cargo trailer on eastbound DE Rt. 273 approaching Old Baltimore Pike in Newark. For an unknown reason, Lester failed to stop his vehicle and struck the rear of a 2010 Nissan Altima which was being operated by Sylvia Pean-Alfaro, 35 who was stopped for a red light on eastbound Rt. 273 in the right hand lane, as well as a 2005 Honda Accord, which was being operated by Latisha Spurlock, 28, and which was also stopped on eastbound Rt. 273. The cargo trailer that was being pulled by Lester struck the left rear side of a 2006 Chevrolet truck and which was being operated by Justin Twilley, 23, and which was stopped on eastbound Rt. 273 behind the Nissan Altima.

 

Latisha Spurlock and Matthew Lester were both transported by EMS to the Christiana Hospital where they are currently being treated for their injuries.

 

This crash remains under investigation at this time. Traffic on DE Rt. 273 as well as on Old Baltimore Pike was restricted for approximately four hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.

***SECOND UPDATE***

 

DE Rt. 273 and Old Baltimore Pike have been reopened to traffic. This crash remains under investigation at this time.

***UPDATED INFORMATION***

 

DE Rt. 273 eastbound remains shut down at the accident scene. DE Rt. 273 westbound has one lane open at this time. Both directions of Old Baltimore Pike have restricted access to Rt. 273. Commuters are asked to avoid the area.

Newark- The Delaware State Police are currently on the scene of a multiple vehicle personal injury accident that occurred on DE Rt. 273 in Newark. Initial information is that several individuals have been injured. Traffic on DE Rt. 273 in both directions as well as Old Baltimore Pike in both directions has been affected. Commuters are asked to avoid the area and find alternate means of travel.
