Resume Update 03/28/11:

Milton-Delaware State Police Sunday evening investigated a serious motor vehicle crash on SR 1 Coastal Highway south of Deep Branch Road Milton.  

The crash reportedly occurred around 6:15 p.m. 

An investigation conducted by the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit revealed that a 1997 Toyota 4-Runner was initially traveling southbound on Coastal Highway.  The Toyota driven by Timothy M. Kates-50 of Bethany Beach Delaware began to drift onto the shoulder of the southbound lanes before entering a ditch and striking a concrete culvert.  After striking the culvert the Toyota became airborne and rolled several times.  Kates was then ejected from his vehicle. 

Kates was flown to Christiana Hospital by Delaware State Police Aviation where he succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash around 3:46 a.m. Monday morning. 

Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit are continuing their investigation and requests anyone who has information surrounding the crash to contact DSP Troop 7 at 302-644-5020 ext 118. 

Portions of Coastal Highway were closed for approximately 3 hours while to crash was investigated.  (Alcohol Unknown)

DSP News Release:  Troopers on Scene of Serious Motor Vehicle Crash

Location: DE Rt.1 southbound north of DE Rt. 16, east of Milton, DE

Date of Occurrence: Sunday, March 27, 2011 at approximately 6:15 p.m.

Resume:   

The Delaware State Police are currently at the scene of a serious motor vehicle crash on DE Rt. 1 east of Milton. Initial indication is that the crash involves at least one vehicle that rolled over with a subject being ejected from the car. Troopers are asking motorist to avoid the area as they conduct their investigation.

More information will be released after it is received.
