DSP News Release: Laurel Police’s Canine “Smoke” Alerts on Trunk of Vehicle

Resume: Laurel-Thursday March 24th a Delaware State Trooper on routine patrol stopped a 2001 Silver Mercedes which resulted in the seizure of approximately 2 pounds of marijuana.
The operator of the Mercedes William T. Bryant-33 of Newport News Virginia performed an illegal lane change which initially drew the Trooper’s attention. The Trooper’s suspicions of criminal activity were heightened after speaking with Bryant.
The Trooper summoned for the assistance of Laurel Police Department’s canine “Smoke” who is trained to detect illegal drugs. Canine “Smoke” conducted a scan of Bryant’s vehicle and alerted in the trunk area. A subsequent more thorough search of the trunk resulted in the discovery of hidden compartments containing the 2 lbs of marijuana.
State Police charged Bryant with Possession with Intent to Deliver Marijuana, Maintaining a vehicle for keeping controlled substances and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bryant was arraigned and released after he posted $6,000 secured bond. William T. Bryant
