Resume: The Delaware State Police are investigating two separate personal injury motor vehicle crashes that occurred this morning on DE Rt. 1.
The first crash occurred at approximately 5:40 a.m. as Martha M. Eschelweck, 32, was operating a 1994 GMC 2500 and was traveling on Rt. 1 northbound just south of Bayview Road in Middletown. For an unknown reason, the GMC left the east side of the roadway and traveled up an embankment. The vehicle then overturned onto its left hand side where it came to rest. Martha Eschelweck was transported from the scene by EMS to the Christiana Hospital where she was treated and released for minor injuries. The investigation into the crash is still on-going at this time. Thomas was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The second crash occurred at approximately 6:45 a.m. as Annie R. Thomas was operating a 1995 Ford Explorer and was traveling in the left hand lane of northbound DE Rt. 1 at Black Diamond Road north of Smyrna. Thomas advised investigating troopers that an unknown make and model vehicle began to enter into her lane causing her to swerve to the left in order to avoid a collision. Thomas’ vehicle then entered the center median of the roadway where she lost control and traveled into and across the southbound lanes of Rt. 1. The vehicle then left the west edge of the roadway and traveled up an embankment where it overturned several times before coming to rest.
Annie Thomas and a 14 year old female passenger in her vehicle were both transported from the scene by EMS to the Kent General Hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries. The crash remains under investigation. Both occupants of the vehicle were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
