DSP News Release: Detectives Make More Arrests in Rehoboth Area Robberies

Resume: Rehoboth- The Delaware State Police, with the assistance of officers from the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and the Rehoboth Police Department, have arrested a 19 year old Felton, Delaware man, a 14 year old Rehoboth, Delaware male, and a 17 year old Lewes, Delaware female in connection with two robberies that occurred in the Rehoboth area on June 16, 2011 and June 18, 2011.
Detectives were able to link Thorton Matthews and Marvin Burton to the robbery of two females as they walked along Rehoboth Avenue Extended in the area of Church Street on Thursday, June 16 at approximately 11:40 p.m. During the robbery, Matthews and Burton knocked the victims to the ground from behind and stole their purses before fleeing. The 19 year old victim suffered a fractured cheekbone as a result of being knocked to the ground.
Investigators were also able to link Thorton Matthews and Marvin Burton, as well as Ashley Justice, 17, to the robbery of two men and a woman that occurred on June 18th, 2011 on Hebron Road, east of Canal Street in Rehoboth at approximately 2:00 a.m. The robbery occurred as 2 male and 1 female victim were walking east on Hebron Road. They were then approached from behind by two male suspects and a female suspect. The female suspect struck the female victim in the head in an attempt to knock her to the ground. The victim was able to run away, however. The two male suspects struck both male victims in the head and face with pieces of cinder block. Both victims were knocked to the ground. The suspects then removed cellular phones and money from the victim’s pockets before fleeing. One 29 year old male victim received facial and head injuries. The other 29 year old victim received facial and head injuries as well as several broken teeth.
The three defendants were charged by state police with the above list of crimes and arraigned at JP Court 2 (Matthews) and the Sussex County Family Court (Burton and Justice). They were then all committed to the Department of Corrections for lack of secured bail.
The investigation into the rash of robberies and assaults in the Rehoboth area is continuing.

DSP News Release: Delaware State Police Probing Recent Rehoboth Area Robberies/Assaults

Resume: Rehoboth-(Sunday June 18th) Delaware State Police Sunday June 19, 2011 charged 3 persons involved in an assault that occurred Saturday June 18, 2011 around 6:00 pm. The assault happened on Norwood Street N/O Hebron Road Rehoboth Delaware.
John M. Boyer-48, of Harrington and 16 year old and 17 year old Harrington teens were arrested for their involvement in an assault which sent a 35 year old victim to Beebe Hospital for multiple injuries.
A Delaware State Police investigation revealed earlier in the day, prior to the assault an 18 year old Rehoboth teen was involved in a disagreement with the 16 and 17 year old Harrington teens. This incident occurred on Hebron Road Rehoboth Delaware.
Later that afternoon the 18 year old victim and his father and mother returned to the area to attend a social function. When the three victims drove down Norwood Street a large crowd began to fill the streets.
The 18 year old victim was approached by the 17 year old at which time a physical altercation began between the two. The 35 year old Rehoboth man attempted to prevent others in the crowd from intervening. During this altercation John M. Boyer and Kevin Boyer emerged from the crowd armed with a “club” and shovel. John and Kevin Boyer are alleged to have assaulted the 35 year old man with the club and shovel. The 35 year old man was also stabbed in his forearm with an unknown object during the fracas.
The 18 year old victim and his 35 year old mother attempted to help their father/spouse however were chased to their vehicles by the two teens. The 18 year old victim was repeatedly kicked and punched as he entered his vehicle.
The 35 year old Rehoboth woman was menaced by Kevin Boyer who held a shovel above her as she attempted to flee the area.
Delaware State Police obtained arrest warrants for the teens and John and Kevin Boyer. As of Sunday June 19th the two teens and John M. Boyer were charged with assault, conspiracy and weapons offenses. State Troopers are still attempting to locate Kevin T. Boyer.
Delaware State Police are also seeking assistance in solving additional robberies and assault crimes which occurred within a short distance of the aforementioned assault.
(Sunday May 29th 2011) Delaware State Police investigated a robbery that occurred on Hebron Road and Central Road Rehoboth around 2:00 am. The 25 year old robbery victim was walking home when he was approached from behind by several black males.
The victim was then struck on the back of his head with an unknown object. During the assault the victim was robbed of his wallet and cell phone. The suspects following the robbery fled the scene. The victim did not require medical attention.
One suspect is described as a black male, 5’10” and weighing 170-180 lbs.
(Sunday June 5th 2011) Delaware State Troopers contacted a 40 year old Rehoboth Beach man concerning an assault complaint. The investigation revealed that the victim was walking to his residence when a 3-6 black males approached him asking for cigarettes around 12:40 am.
The victim suddenly was attacked by the group of men and struck several times. Once the victim began to yell for help the suspects fled the area. The victim did not have any property stolen. The victim did not require medical treatment.
One suspect is described as a black male 14-20 year of age, 5’05”-5’10”, weighing 150-180 lbs. NFD on any of the other suspects involved.
(Thursday June 16th 2011) Previously released on June 17th Delaware State Police Thursday evening investigated a robbery on Rehoboth Avenue E/O Church Street outside the limits of Rehoboth.
The robbery occurred around 11:40 pm as two victims were walking home from work. The victims were walking eastbound on Rehoboth Avenue when they were attacked from behind.
Both the victims were struck in the back of their heads which caused them to fall to the ground. The suspects described as two younger black males, ages 18-20, 5’06”-5’08”, both weighing 150-160 lbs continued to assault the victims as they lay on the ground.
The suspects removed the victims’ purses containing cellular phones and an undisclosed amount of United States Currency and fled.
The victims were taken to Beebe Hospital Lewes, treated and released for multiple contusions and abrasions. The 19 year old victim suffered a fractured cheek and was also released.
(Saturday June 18th 2011) On June 18th around 1:50 am Delaware State Police investigated a robbery/ assault on Hebron Road Rehoboth Delaware. State Troopers contacted 3 victims concerning the robbery.
The investigation revealed that two males and one female victim were walking northbound on Hebron Road when they observed they were being followed. The victims observed two black males and a black female attempting to catch up to them.
The suspects began asking for directions and increasing their pace toward the victims. The victims were suddenly struck in the back of their heads by the suspects. The victims unable to fend off the attack fell to the ground and were robbed of an undisclosed amount of United States Currency.
The suspects fled the scene and could only be described as two black males and one black female.
The victims received treatment at Beebe Hospital for severe contusions and abrasions to their head and face and were released.
Police Action: Delaware State Police and the Rehoboth Police Department are working jointly on similar crimes occurring in both jurisdictions.
Delaware State Police Troop 7 is conducting proactive patrols in the affected area as well as their normal tours of duties.
The Delaware State Police Criminal Investigative Unit is also coordinating their efforts at solving the recent robbery/ assaults affecting the Rehoboth Beach Community and seeks the public’s assistance.
Delaware State Police will explore all avenues attempting to determine if all crimes are related.
