DSP News Release: Greenwood Homicide Investigation

Defendant: · Ronald W. Williamson-66 of Laurel, Delaware
Charges: · Murder 1st Degree · Possession of Firearm during Commission of a Felony · Possession of Firearm by a Person Prohibited (2 counts)
Resume: Greenwood-The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit and the Greenwood Police Department are continuing the investigation into the fatal shooting of a Greenwood woman that occurred on Sunday morning.
On Sunday, June 26, 2011 at approximately 9:55 a.m. the Greenwood Police Department and the Delaware State Police responded to a residence located at 7 Water Street, Greenwood, Delaware for the report of a subject with a gun.
The investigation has determined that Ronald W. Williamson-66 of Laurel, Delaware arrived at the Water Street address to confront a 62 year old female acquaintance that lived in the residence. Also located inside the residence were a 25 year old male, 82 year old female, and the victim Connie Breeding-55. The 62 year old female fled the residence after making contact with Williamson. Williamson then confronted Connie Breeding outside of the residence.
Upon arrival on Water Street, a Greenwood Police Officer (name being withheld at this time) observed Ronald W. Williamson-66 of Laurel, Delaware outside of the residence armed with a handgun. Williamson was observed struggling with the female victim identified as Connie Breeding-55 of Greenwood. At some point during the struggle, Williamson shot breeding in the head and then fired several rounds in the direction of the Greenwood Police Officer. The rounds missed the Greenwood Police Officer and he was uninjured. Williamson fled into the residence at which time he confronted the 25 year old male and the 82 year old female. While inside the residence, Williamson fired a round at the 25 year old male, striking him in the hand. After being shot, the 25 year old male was able to escape and flee the residence. Williamson then took the 82 year old female hostage inside the house.
The Delaware State Police Special Operations Team recovered the body of Connie Breeding which was located in a field approximately 75’ from the residence. Breeding was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was turned over the Delaware Medical Examiner’s Office for post-mortem examination.
The 25 year old male was transported by ambulance to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for non life threatening injuries.
The Delaware State Police Special Operations Response Team (SORT) and the Delaware State Police Conflict Management Team responded and established a perimeter around the residence. Greenwood residents in the area of the incident were evacuated to the Greenwood Fire Company. State Police, Delaware State Fire Police, and DELDOT closed roadways in and around Greenwood. The Delaware State Police Conflict Management Team was able to quickly establish communication with Williamson who remained inside the house with the hostage.
At approximately 5:30 p.m. Williamson released the 82 year old female hostage from the house. The 82 year old female exited the residence into the front yard and was rescued by the State Police Special Operations Response Team and was reported in good condition. The State Police Conflict Management Team remained in contact with Williamson throughout the entire 11 hour standoff and attempted to persuade him to surrender.
At approximately 8:45 p.m. Williamson exited the house with his hands in the air and surrendered to the Delaware State Police Special Operations Team. He was taken into custody without incident.
Williamson was transported to Troop 5 where he was charged with the above crimes.
Delaware State Police Homicide detectives are continuing to gather information surrounding the investigation.
The Arraignment and Bond Information was not available at the time of this release.
