DSP News Release:  Elsmere Woman Charged after Running into Telephone Pole

-Child Under 8 not in a Child Restraint

-Careless Driving

-Failure to Transfer Vehicle Title

Elsmere- A 23 year old Elsmere, DE woman has been arrested after a Tuesday afternoon crash in which her 6 year old daughter was injured.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7, as Samantha Esty was operating a 1993 Chrysler Concorde and was traveling in the right hand lane of eastbound DE Rt. 2 approaching Central Avenue in Elsmere.  Esty’s vehicle began to drift into the left hand lane at which time she overcorrected and sharply re-entered the right hand lane. The vehicle then traveled off of the edge of the roadway and struck a telephone pole where it came to rest.

Esty’s six year old daughter, who was in the rear seat of the vehicle, was removed from the scene by EMS and transported to the A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children where she was treated and released for her injuries. Samantha Esty was not injured.

After further investigation, it was learned that Esty was under the influence of Xanax and also in possession of 28 doses of the drug, which is a Schedule IV controlled substance. Troopers also learned that she had failed to properly restrain her six year old daughter in a child restraint seat as required by law.

Esty was arrested and charged with the above list of crimes. She was arraigned at the Court of Common Pleas in Wilmington and released on $2501.00 unsecured bail.
