DSP News Release:  Driver Slightly Injured in Crash

Location: DE Rt. 1 northbound south of DE Rt. 299, Odessa, DE

Date of Occurrence:  Wednesday, June 01, 2011 at 1:20 P.M.

Operators/Vehicles:

Operator: Claude L. Edwards, 66, Virginia Beach, VA

Vehicle: 2012 Volvo Tractor and Semi-Trailer (owned by Penske Truck Leasing)

Resume:   

Odessa- A Virginia man was slightly injured in a one vehicle accident involving an overturned truck that occurred this afternoon.

The crash happened as Claude Edwards was operating a 2012 Volvo tractor and was traveling southbound on DE Rt. 1 south of DE Rt. 299 at approximately 1:20 p.m. today. Edwards advised investigating troopers that he began to choke after drinking water and passed out. The tractor and trailer then crossed the center median and the northbound lanes of DE Rt. 1. It then left the edge of the roadway and traveled approximately 80 ft. before striking an embankment. The tractor trailer then overturned onto its left side and then came to rest after sliding approximately 220 ft.

Claude Edward was transported to the Christiana Hospital by helicopter where he is currently being treated for his injuries. His injuries are not considered life threatening. Edwards was cited by troopers with inattentive driving and failure to have proof of motor vehicle insurance.

The right hand lane of northbound DE Rt. 1 remains closed at this time.

DE Rt. 1 northbound traffic is now being diverted onto US Rt. 13 around the crash scene.

DSP News Release:  Troopers on Scene of Overturned Tractor Trailer

Location: DE Rt. 1 northbound south of DE Rt. 299, Odessa, DE

Date of Occurrence:  Wednesday, June 01, 2011 at approximately 1:20 P.M.

Resume:   

Odessa- The Delaware State Police are currently at the scene of a one vehicle crash involving an overturned tractor trailer in Odessa.

Initial information is that a tractor trailer has driven off of the roadway on northbound DE Rt. 1 and overturned approximately 100 feet off of the road.

One northbound lane of Rt. 1 is closed at this time and commuters should expect delays in the area.

More information will be released after it is received.
