Newark- The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating a motor vehicle crash in which one person died this afternoon on SR#1 in the area of the Christiana Mall, Newark.

The incident happened on Sunday, July 17, 2011 at approximately 1:37 p.m. as Jennifer L. Kemp-29 of Newark, DE was operating a 1997 Chrysler Sebring traveling northbound on State Route 1 approaching the northbound on-ramp to I-95 northbound.  For unknown reasons the Sebring traveled off of the west edge of the roadway and into the center median.  The Sebring continued northbound on the center median travelling approximately 200’ into a construction zone before colliding head-on with a steel “Pile Driver” construction tower that was being stored in a horizontal position on the ground, trapping Kemp inside.

Kemp sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.  Kemp was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.  Preliminary investigation does not indicate that alcohol was a factor in the crash.

State Route 1 in both directions between DE#273 and Churchmans Road was shut down for approximately 3 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the crash and requests anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the Delaware State Police CRU at 302-834-2620 Ext. 278 with information.

DSP News Release:   Preliminary Release of Serious Motor Vehicle Crash with Road Closure

Newark-The Delaware State Police are currently on-scene of a serious motor vehicle crash at SR#1 in the area of the Christiana Mall, Newark.

Troopers are advising that SR#1 in both directions is closed between DE#273 and Churchmans Road and will remain closed for an extended period of time.  Troopers are advising motorists to avoid the area completely and plan alternate routes.  An updated release will be provided as information related to the crash investigation becomes available.
