DSP News Release: Woman in Wheelchair Killed by Hit and Run Drivers, Troopers Search for Suspects

·         Unknown make and model gold in color truck/SUV with front end and grill damage (no further description)

·         Two additional vehicles with no further description



Wilmington-The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal hit and run crash in which a wheelchair bound female was struck Tuesday evening on South Market Street.


Preliminary investigation indicates that the crash occurred on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at approximately 6:35 p.m. as Edith A. McFarland-58 of Wilmington, was in her wheelchair traveling in a westbound direction, attempting to cross the southbound lanes of South Market Street (US 13) in the area of the entrance to the Fairview Inn.


McFarland was struck by the front of an unknown make and model vehicle, described as a gold truck/SUV that was traveling southbound on South Market Street (US 13). After the impact, McFarland was ejected from her wheelchair into the southbound lanes of South Market Street, where she was then struck by two additional vehicles. The gold truck/SUV and the two additional vehicles involved in the incident did not stop and fled southbound on US 13. McFarland was pronounced dead at the scene.


The South Market Street northbound lanes were closed for approximately 1 hour, and the South Market Street southbound lanes were closed for approximately 2.5 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared. The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this incident. The gold truck/SUV has damage to the front end and grill of the vehicle.
