DSP News Release: Troopers Release Details of Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash

Operator: Shawn E. Griner, 37, Wilmington, DE

Vehicle: 1998 Ford  6-wheeled Dump Truck with plow owned by the Delaware Department of Transportation

Victim: Denise McFadden, 51, Wilmington, DE

Penny Hill- The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred early this morning on the Washington Street Extension.

The accident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. this morning as Shawn E. Griner was operating a 1988 Ford truck with a snow plow attached and was in the process of making a u-turn from westbound Washington Street Extension onto eastbound Washington Street Extension just west of Philadelphia Pike in order to resume plowing along Philadelphia Pike. As Griner was in the process of turning, he struck Denise McFadden, 51, who was walking on eastbound Washington Street Extension. McFadden suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was turned over to the medical examiner’s office where an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death. Shawn Griner was not injured.

Washington Street Extension was closed between Philadelphia Pike and the Mt. Pleasant High School as the accident was investigated and cleared. It has since re-opened. This crash is still under investigation at this time.

Wilmington- The Delaware State Police are currently investigating a serious motor vehicle crash that occurred this morning on the Washington Street Extension.

Initial information is that the crash involves a truck and a pedestrian and occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. The crash has Washington Street Extension closed between Philadelphia Pike and Mt. Pleasant High School. Commuters are asked to find alternate means of travel as the accident is being investigated.

More information in reference to this crash will be released after it is received.
