DSP News Release: Detectives Make Arrest in Wawa Robbery/Shooting

Suspect: Andrew N. Bingham, II, 25, New Castle, DE

Resume:
The Delaware State Police have arrested one man and have warrants on file for a second in connection with the robbery of the Wawa Store located in Pike Creek, DE in which a 68 year old male employee was shot in October of last year.
Brian D. Shields, 28, of Newark, DE was arrested on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 in the parking lot of the University Plaza Apartments located off of Chapman Road in Newark after investigators received a tip that he had participated in the robbery of the Wawa located in the 4000 block of New Linden Hill Road, Wilmington, on October 31, 2010. Shields was taken into custody without incident and was charged with the above list of crimes. He was arraigned at JP Court #2 and committed to the Howard Young Correctional Facility for lack of $102,000.00 cash bail.
Detectives have also obtained warrants on Andrew N. Bingham, II, 25, of New Castle after he was identified as the second suspect who had participated in this robbery. On Wednesday, November 17, 2010 detectives were contacted by the Pennsylvania State Police Media Barracks, who advised that they had arrested Bingham, along with two other men, in connection with a home invasion robbery that had occurred in their jurisdiction. During their investigation of the home invasion, information was obtained that Bingham had been involved in the Wawa robbery in Delaware. Delaware State Police detectives then obtained warrants charging Bingham with the above crimes. He is currently incarcerated in Pennsylvania and will be arrested by Delaware detectives upon his extradition back to Delaware.

DSP News Release: Clerk Shot During Robbery in Pike Creek
Location: Wawa Convenience Store, 4555 New Linden Hill Road, Wilmington, DE
Date of Occurrence: Sunday, October 31, 2010 at 4:50 a.m.
Victim:
-68 year old Newark, DE man (employee) -58 year old Millsboro, DE man
Suspect:
Suspect #1: Male, 5’08”-5’10” tall, with an average build. He was last seen wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, dark gloves, blue jeans, tan boots, and was wearing a face mask. He was also armed with a dark handgun.
Suspect #2: Male (no further description). He was last seen wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, light gloves, and was also armed with a handgun.
Resume: Delaware State Police detectives are investigating a robbery in which a clerk was shot that occurred in the Pike Creek area of Wilmington this morning.
The incident happened at approximately 4:50 a.m. as two male suspects entered the Wawa Store located on New Linden Hill Road and displayed handguns. The suspects confronted the 68 year old male clerk and demanded money from the store’s cash register. As the clerk was walking to the sales counter, he was shot in the thigh by one of the suspects. The suspects then removed an undisclosed amount of money from the register as well as cigarettes and fled from the store. As the suspects were fleeing, they observed a 58 year old man from Millsboro, DE outside of the store sitting in a car. The suspects then fired two shots toward the man, striking his vehicle. The suspects then fled through the parking lot. The store clerk was treated by EMS and transported to the Christiana Hospital where he was treated and released. The second victim was not injured.
