New Castle- The Delaware State Police have arrested a 20 year old New Castle man after he attempted to break into one business and then robbed a second early Sunday morning.
The incident began as troopers were called to the Shell gas station located in the 200 block of Christiana Road, New Castle, in reference to a male subject who had just kicked in the glass of the front door of the business. The subject ran off after he learned that there were employees inside of the store and responded to the 7-11 located across the street from the Shell station. Once there the subject, later identified as Michael C. Gardiner, entered the store and confronted the 28 year old male employee. Gardiner then demanded to use the phone and when the victim refused, he produced a knife which he placed on the sales counter. However, the victim grabbed the knife and threw it onto the floor. Gardiner then fled the store into the parking lot where he then attempted to get into a vehicle that was occupied by two female subjects. The victim followed Gardiner outside. After being unable to get into the vehicle, Gardiner re-entered the store, ran behind the sales counter, and removed several candy bars and cigars that were on display for sale and placed them in his pocket. The victim, who had also re-entered the store, locked himself in a back office area and called 911. Michael Gardiner then attempted to flee from the store but was apprehended by troopers who had responded to the area after receiving a call about the attempted burglary.
Michael Gardiner was arrested and charged with the above list of crimes. He was arraigned at JP Court 20 and committed to the Howard Young Correctional Facility for lack of $7000.00 secured bail. There were no injuries.
