UPDATED INFORMATION CONCERNING BARRICADE INCIDENT

Updated Information Concerning Friday’s Barricade Incident

Resume Update Friday February 18, 2011

Frederica-Early Friday morning Delaware State Police responded to the 3600 block of Bay Road after receiving a 911 call of gunshots being heard.  State Police checked this area around 12:39 a.m. however were unable to determine where the gunshots were coming from.

State Police later learned that the victim, a 20 year old Dover man, came to this residence after he received information that his cousin a 16 year old female runaway may be inside the house.

The 20 year old victim was then confronted by a 17 year old male believed to be the boyfriend of the runaway.  An argument ensued between the 17 year old male and the 20 year old victim which escalated into the 17 year old male allegedly discharging a firearm.  State Police are still gathering details about the incident and are attempting to determine whether the gunshots were into the air or in the direction of the victim.

After State Police were able to determine the exact location of the incident they attempted to make contact with individuals inside this residence.  State Police realizing that the incident involved a gun set up a perimeter around the residence and evacuated surrounding residences.  The residence which sits very close to the edge of Bay Road, a main thruway between Frederica and Milford had to be closed temporarily until the situation could be stabilized.

State Police shortly before 8:00 a.m. were able to convince the occupants of the residence to come outside.  State Police took 6 persons into custody until additional investigative details could be gathered.

A search warrant was obtained and a search of the residence resulted in two firearms being seized.  The first firearm is a black 9mm Baretta containing a “loaded” magazine.  The second firearm a 9mm Highpoint Lugar with an obliterated serial number also loaded.  State Police detectives are running checks on the firearms to determine whether they are stolen.

State Police expect to charge the 17 year old later today with Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited, Possession of a Firearm with an Obliterated serial number and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

Detectives are still conducting their investigation into this morning incident and I will provide additional information when it becomes available.
