Updated DSP News Release:  Body of Pedestrian Struck by Train Located

Location: CSX Railroad Tracks approximately 1/2 mile East of Harmony Road, Newark

Date of Occurrence:  Sunday, February 13, 2011 at 10:20 a.m.

Victim:  17 year old male from Newark, DE

Newark- On Sunday, February 13, 2011 at approximately 10:20 a.m. Delaware State Police located the deceased body of the victim that had been struck by a CSX train on Friday, February 11, 2011.

Investigation reveals that the victim, identified as a 17 year old male, of Newark, DE was walking on the CSX railroad tracks in the area of the Brookhaven development, East of Harmony Road when he was struck by a CSX freight train traveling eastbound. The CSX train conductor had an indication that the train had struck an unknown object on the tracks.  The conductor brought the train to a stop immediately after the collision in the area of Delaware Park.

Troopers and K-9’s, along with Firefighters, conducted a ground search in the surrounding area including the White Clay Creek, and brought in additional resources including the Delaware State Police Helicopter to assist in an aerial search with negative results.

After an extensive search that spanned throughout the weekend, the Delaware State Police Scuba Unit located the victim’s body submerged in approximately 6 feet of water in the White Clay Creek.

No foul play is suspected at this time and the investigation is continuing.  The victim’s body was turned over to the Delaware Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

Newark- The Delaware State Police are currently investigating a collision involving a CSX train that possibly struck a pedestrian in Newark. The incident occurred at approximately 2:05 p.m. in the area of Red Mill Road and Ruthar Drive. Troopers are currently searching the area for a possible victim. The CSX train has stopped in the area located behind Delaware Park. The incident is still under investigation. More information will be released after it is received.
