DSP News Release: Laurel Woman Dies in Single Vehicle Crash

Laurel-Delaware State Police Wednesday February 9, 2011 investigated a Fatal Crash on SR 9 County Seat Highway E/O Fire Tower Road E/O Laurel around 10:58 a.m. 

The crash occurred when a 2001 Ford Escape driven by Gilbert Lemay-57 of Laurel was traveling westbound on SR 9.  Gilbert Lemay’s wife Carol T. Lemay-53 of Laurel was seated in the front right passenger seat.  Gilbert Lemay had just passed a slower moving vehicle and re-entered the westbound lane of travel.  For an unknown reason Lemay’s vehicle after re-entering the westbound lane next traveled off the north edge of the roadway.  When the Ford Escape traveled off the roadway it initially struck a utility pole then a driveway culvert catapulting the vehicle into the air. 

Emergency crews transported Carol T. Lemay to Nanticoke Hospital where she was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the crash.  Gilbert Lemay was not injured in the crash. 

Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit are continuing their investigation and also ask anyone with information concerning this crash to contact Delaware State Police Troop 7 at 302-644-5020 ext. 112

Impairment does not appear to have been a factor in the crash and both driver and passenger were properly restrained.
