FATAL PEDESTRIAN CRASH NAAMANS ROAD


DSP News Release: Fatal Pedestrian Crash Naamans Road 

 

Location:

·         Naamans Road (DE 92) east of Concord Pike (US 202), Wilmington, DE

 

Date of Occurrence:

·         Friday, December 30, 2011 at 6:30 a.m.

 

Pedestrian:

·         Carlos Romero-Espinoza-50 of West Grove, PA

 

Operator/Vehicle:

·         Gene D. McMillan-39 of Newark, DE

·         2001 Saturn LS Sedan

North Wilmington-The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash in which a pedestrian was struck this morning on Naamans Road.

 

The crash occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. this morning as Carlos Romero-Espinoza-50 of West Grove, PA was walking in a northbound direction crossing the eastbound lanes of Naamans Road, east of Concord Pike. Romero-Espinoza attempted to cross the westbound lanes when he was struck by a 2001 Saturn LS Sedan being operated by Gene D. McMillan-39 of Newark, DE.

 

Romero-Espinoza was transported to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center where he was pronounced dead.

 

Gene D. McMillan was properly restrained and was not injured.

 

The westbound lanes of Naamans Road were initially closed and then reopened for travel with limited lane restrictions for approximately 2 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared. The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this crash.

 

 

Troopers remind pedestrians of using caution and safety when walking on or near roadways. If you must cross a roadway, make sure to look left, then right, then left again before proceeding. When walking near a roadway always make yourself visible to drivers by wearing bright/light colored clothing and reflective materials. Pedestrians that are walking at night must carry a flashlight for added safety.
