DSP News Release: Fatal Pedestrian Crash Kirkwood Highway

·         Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at 7:41 p.m.



·         32 year old Newark man (release of name pending notification of NOK)



·         Edwina Ackerman-61 of Newark, DE

·         2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer



Newark-The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash in which a pedestrian was struck last night on Kirkwood Highway.


The crash occurred at approximately 7:41 p.m. last evening as the 32 year old male pedestrian was walking with his dog in a northbound direction crossing the eastbound lanes of Kirkwood Highway, west of Pike Creek Road. The male pedestrian attempted to cross the westbound lanes when he was struck by a 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer being operated by Edwina Ackerman-61 of Newark, DE.


The 32 year old male pedestrian was transported by ambulance to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center where he was pronounced dead. His name will be released pending the notification of next of kin.


Edwina Ackerman was properly restrained and was not injured.

The dog was removed by bystanders and reported to be taken to a local vet for treatment with unknown status.


The westbound lanes of Kirkwood Highway were closed for approximately 2 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared. The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this incident.


Troopers remind pedestrians of using caution and safety when walking on or near roadways. If you must cross a roadway, make sure to look left, then right, then left again before proceeding. When walking near a roadway always make yourself visible to drivers by wearing bright/light colored clothing and reflective materials. Pedestrians that are walking at night must carry a flashlight for added safety.
