DSP News Release:  Pedestrian Struck on South DuPont Highway in New Castle

Location:  South DuPont Highway (US 13) Northbound at Llangollen Boulevard, New Castle, DE

Date of Occurrence:  Friday, December 16, 2011 at approximately 8:15 p.m.

à        Pedestrian: Matthew Hunter, 46, New Castle, DE

Resume:

New Castle, DE- The Delaware State Police is currently investigating a crash involving a pedestrian that occurred early last evening.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m. as Kassim Duncan-24 was operating a 1999 Buick Regal traveling northbound in the left lane of South DuPont Highway approaching Llangollen Boulevard.  An SUV traveling in front of Duncan slammed on it’s brakes suddenly causing Duncan to swerve into the right lane striking Matthew Hunter-46.

The investigation revealed, there were approximately 3 – 5 pedestrians, including Hunter, attempting to cross the highway at the same time which caused the SUV to stop suddenly.  Duncan was unable to see Hunter due to him wearing dark colored clothing and the area being unlit.

Hunter was transported to Christiana Hospital where he remains in critical but stable condition.

The SUV did not strike anybody or anything and departed the area without stopping.  No further information was given on the SUV.

This crash remains under investigation.

Resume:

New Castle, DE-The Delaware State Police are currently on the scene of motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian.

The initial investigation has revealed that a subject has been struck by a motor vehicle.

Troopers have shut down US 13 northbound around the scene of the crash and commuters are asked to find alternate means of travel.

The investigation into this crash is in its early stages and more information will be released at a later time.
