DSP News Release: Lewes Woman Killed in Single Vehicle Crash

Location: Angola Road (CR 277), south of John J. Williams Highway (SR 24), Lewes, DE

Date and Time of Occurrence:  Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at approximately 10:15 a.m.

Operator and Vehicle:

• Joshua D. Byrd, 20, Lewes, DE
• 2003 Ford F-250 pulling a boat and trailer

Resume:

Lewes, DE- The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a single vehicle crash in which a Lewes, DE woman was killed that occurred this morning.

The incident happened as Joshua D. Byrd, 20, was operating a 2003 Ford F-250 which was pulling a boat and trailer and was traveling southbound on Angola Road just south of the John J. Williams Highway. As Byrd rounded a curve in the roadway, he began to fall asleep. The Ford drifted off of the west edge of the roadway where it then struck a ditch. A front seat passenger in Byrd’s car, Elaina L. Nida, 20, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle. She then became entangled under the boat and trailer.

Elaina Nida was removed from the scene by EMS and transported to the Beebe Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Joshua D. Byrd was also removed from the scene and transported to the Beebe Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released for his injuries.

This crash remains under investigation at this time. Angola Road was closed for approximately two hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.

Angola Road has been reopened to traffic at this time.

DSP News Release:  Troopers on scene of Serious Motor Vehicle Crash

Location: Angola Road, south of John J. Williams Highway, Lewes, DE

Date and Time of Occurrence:  Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at approximately 10:45 a.m.

Resume:   

Lewes, DE- The Delaware State Police are currently investigating a serious motor vehicle crash which occurred a short time ago in Lewes.

The crash has Angola Road closed from the John J. Williams Highway to Camp Arrowhead Road in Lewes and commuters are asked to find alternate means of travel.

Details of the crash are not available at this time.
