DSP News Release:  Crash with Rollover I495, Claymont

Claymont-The Delaware State Police are investigating a crash with an overturned vehicle and ejection that occurred this morning on I495 south of Claymont.

The incident occurred as Sonya Pipher-24 of Wilmington was operating a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu traveling I495 southbound approximately 2.0 miles south of Philadelphia Pike.  Pipher swerved the Malibu to the right after observing an unknown vehicle attempt to enter her lane of travel from the left.  Pipher lost control of the Malibu which continued traveling in a southeast direction, striking the guardrail on the east edge of the roadway.  The Malibu flipped over the guard rail onto the center median, overturning several times before coming to a stop within the median.  Pipher was ejected from the vehicle onto the median.

Sonya Pipher was transported to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center where she treated and admitted in serious condition.

Preliminary investigation indicates that she was not wearing her seatbelt during the collision.

This crash remains under investigation.
