Resume: Georgetown-Delaware State Police Wednesday August 10, 2011 charged James A. Weldin-27 of Milton with his 4th Offense of Driving under the Influence.
State Police responded to Lewes-Georgetown Highway E/O Georgetown Delaware around 6:30 a.m. for a 3 vehicle crash. The crash involved a Ford F-150 pickup truck, Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck and a stolen 2011 Toyota Scion.
The investigation revealed the S-10 pickup driven by Domingo Gonzales-Perez-50 of Georgetown was driving eastbound on Lewes-Georgetown Highway when his vehicle was hit from behind. Perez’s pickup was struck by a 2011 Toyota Scion driven by Weldin who was traveling eastbound Lewes-Georgetown Highway behind Perez.
After impact Perez’s vehicle was pushed into the westbound lanes of Lewes-Georgetown Highway and into the path of a Ford F-150 pickup truck. The Ford F-150 pickup traveling westbound was driven by Daniel MacDonald-51 of Rehoboth Beach Delaware.
MacDonald was transported to Beebe Hospital where he was treated and released for facial lacerations and head contusions. No other persons were injured in the crash.
When Troopers arrived on the scene of the crash Weldin was observed displaying unusual erratic behavior. As Troopers attempted to place handcuffs onto Weldin, he resisted and caused criminal mischief to a Trooper’s uniform. During the struggle the Trooper suffered minor contusions to his leg however did not require medical treatment.
An investigation into Weldin’s driving history disclosed he was convicted on three previous occasions for Driving under the Influence (05/06/08, 01/05/11 and 08/05/11).
A computer inquiry revealed the Toyota Scion Weldin was driving was stolen from the Rehoboth area and displayed fictitious Delaware registration.
Weldin was charged with Assault on a Police Officer, Vehicular Assault, Receiving Stolen Property (vehicle), and 4th Offense Driving under the Influence of any Drug and other traffic related offenses. After being arraigned Weldin was remanded to the Sussex Correctional Institute in lieu of $9,700.00 cash bond.
The roadway was temporarily closed for approximately 1 hour while the crash was investigated.
