DSP News Release:  Two Injured in DE Rt. 1 Crash

Location: Southbound DE Rt. 1 north of Pole Bridge Road, Middletown, DE

Date of Occurrence:  Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 6:45 p.m.

Operator #1: Florence M. Greene, 47, Newark, DE

Vehicle #1: 2005 Chevrolet Impala

Operator #2: Gerald W. Humphreys, 28, Newark, DE

Vehicle #2: 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix

Middletown- The Delaware State Police investigated a two vehicle crash in which two people were injured that occurred last night on DE Rt. 1 in Middletown.

The accident occurred as Gerald W. Humphries of Newark, DE was operating a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix and was traveling at a high rate of speed in the right hand lane of southbound De Rt. 1 in the area of Pole Bridge Road at approximately 6:45 p.m. last night. Humphreys attempted to make a lane change into the left hand travel lane however; he failed to maintain control of his vehicle and struck the rear of a 2005 Chevrolet Impala that was being operated by Florence M. Greene of Newark, DE. The force of the impact caused Greene’s vehicle to travel off of the west edge of the roadway and down an embankment where it then struck a tree. The vehicle then came to rest in a concrete culvert. Gerald Humphries vehicle left the east edge of the highway and traveled onto the shoulder where it then struck a metal guardrail. It then traveled back across the southbound lanes of Rt. 1 where it came to rest down the embankment.

Florence Greene and Gerald Humphries were both transported from the scene by EMS to the Christiana Hospital where they were both treated for non life threatening injuries.

Gerald Humphries was issued citations for Reckless Driving as well as Driving on a Suspended Operator’s License. DE Rt.1 southbound was closed for approximately 20 minutes as the accident was investigated and cleared.

Southbound Delaware Rt. 1 at Pole Bridge Road has been re-opened at this time; however, there may be delays in the area.

The crash is still under investigation at this time. More information will be released after it is received.

DSP News Release:  Troopers on Scene of Personal Injury Accident

Location: DE Rt. 1 southbound at Pole Bridge Road, Middletown, DE

Date of Occurrence:  Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at approximately 7:00 p.m.

Resume:   

Middletown- The Delaware State Police are currently on the scene of a personal injury accident on DE Rt. 1 at Pole Bridge Road, Middletown. Preliminary information is that there are four vehicle involved in the accident. Information on the injured parties is not available at this time.

Southbound Rt. 1 is currently closed and traffic is being diverted onto Pole Bridge Road.

More information will be released once the investigation into the crash is complete.
