WILMINGTON MAN ARRESTED AFTER BANK ROBBERY


DSP News Release: Wilmington Man Arrested after Bank Robbery

 

Location: Wells Fargo Bank, 2624 Capitol Trail, Newark, DE

 

Dates of Occurrence:   Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 2:30 p.m.

 

Defendant: David L. Matthews, Jr., 38, Wilmington, DE

 

Charge: Robbery 1st Degree

Newark- Delaware State Police detectives have arrested a Wilmington man after he committed the robbery of a Newark, DE bank this afternoon.

 

The incident occurred as a male suspect entered the Wells Fargo Bank branch located in the 2600 block of Capitol Trail in Newark, at approximately 2:30 p.m. today. The suspect approached a 38 year old female teller and presented a note to her demanding cash and threatening to harm her with a gun if she did not comply. The suspect, however, did not display a weapon. The female victim complied with the suspect’s demands and turned over an undisclosed amount of money to him. The suspect then fled from the bank and was last seen fleeing westbound on Capitol Trail. A description of the suspect was broadcast and a search of the area was conducted.

 

At approximately 2:50 p.m. a trooper spotted a subject matching the description of the robbery suspect walking on Old Harmony Road just south of Capitol Trail. A search of the subject was conducted at which time money was located in one of his socks. The subject, later identified as David L. Matthews, 38, was detained and transported bank to the Wells Fargo Bank where he was positively identified as the suspect who had robbed the bank.

 

David L. Matthews, Jr. was arrested and charged with one count of Robbery 1st Degree. His arraignment information was not available at the time of this release.
