Bridgeville-On Tuesday April 5th Delaware State Police Troop 5 will have a dedication ceremony and unveiling of the “Troop 5 Fallen Troopers Memorial”. 

 

The dedication ceremony demonstrates Delaware State Police’s continued commitment to preserving the memory of our fallen Troopers and a testament to their ultimate sacrifice. “Their sacrifice will always be remembered.”

 

Troop 5 Fallen Troopers:

Trooper Gerard T. Dowd

07/16/1962-09/11/1990
Trooper Gerard T. Dowd, 28, was killed in a fatal accident, September 11, 1990, when his patrol vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer at the intersection of Delaware Route 54 and Maryland 353.  At the time of Trooper Dowd’s death, he was responding to an emergency call to assist a fellow officer at a fight in progress complaint near Frankford, Delaware. 

 

Trooper Gerard T. Dowd was assigned to the patrol division at Troop 5, Bridgeville. Trooper Dowd was memorialized September 15, 1990, at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Seaford Delaware.  Trooper Dowd is survived by his parents, Robert F. and Jean Cameron; two brothers Robert J. and Frank Jr., and three sisters, Molly, Katy and Ann.

 

Trooper Sandra M. Wagner

02/17/1968-04/05/1996

Trooper Sandra M. Wagner, 28 was the first female Delaware State Trooper to die in the line of duty.  She was killed on April 5th, 1996, while attempting to stop a speeding motorist.  Trooper Wagner while attempting to conduct the traffic stop collided with a tractor-trailer on Delaware Route 404 near Bridgeville Delaware. 

 

Affectionately called “Sandi”, Trooper Wagner is survived by her mother, Patricia; her father and stepmother, Joseph and Betty Wagner; sisters, Candace and Kristen; stepsister and stepbrother, Denise and Dennis Risner. 

 

Guest Speaker: Lewis D. Schiliro- Director Department of Safety and Homeland Security will provide comments during the dedication services.
