DELAWARE STATE POLICE COMMUNITY SERVICES SECTION
During 2003, the Community Services Section continued its mission to develop cooperative relationships with members of the community, organizations and businesses. Master Corporal Chuck McCall coordinates the activities of this section. In the effort to meet its mission this section reached out to over 16,000 people through safety and educational programming across the state.
A variety of programming was presented based on the needs of the communities and businesses of the state. The following topics were presented to community members: law enforcement careers, drug awareness, fraud, safe computing, and personal safety. Businesses programs included: business security, theft, identity theft, and robbery prevention. Highway safety programs included: seat belt safety, traffic safety, and the Rollover Convincer. The following topics were presented to youth groups: alcohol abuse, bicycle safety, child fingerprinting, child protection, school violence prevention and gun safety. Several programs highlighted this year's effort.
The Community Services section co-sponsored the 32nd Annual Trooper Youth Week. The event was held at the Delaware State Police Academy in June of this year. 34 High School seniors and juniors throughout the state were selected to participate in the program. During the week troopers provided insight into the career of law enforcement by providing hands on training in subject such as vehicle stops, drug investigations, fitness training, self-defense, and accident investigation. The instruction, physical training, and discipline provided participants with a better understanding of a law enforcement career.
To promote firearm safety in the home, the Community Services section established a partnership with the National Project ChildSafe Program to promote firearms safety in the home. Project ChildSafe is a nationwide program whose purpose is to promote safe firearms handling and storage practices. Through a coordinated effort with the Lieutenant Governor's Office, Project ChildSafe was a featured display at this year's State Fair. Over 7000 fair visitors were provided key safety education messages and free gun locking devices.
Crime Prevention Tip
Routinely evaluate your residential security by performing a survey of door and window locks. Look for areas that may allow unauthorized entry to the residence. If you have not documented the serial number, model number and other identifying information for you valuables, now is the time to start. Keep the list of valuables in a safe place. The information can be provided to law enforcement should those items become lost or stolen.
